What The Virtual World Has To Offer...

The venue is the virtual world. Numerous individuals participate, meet, and play with each other. These are the occurrences in massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG). These are computer role playing games which developed from continuous improvement of online multi user games. It was Richard Garriott who coined the term MMORPG. He is the creator of the game which popularized MMORPG, Ultima Online.

A fictional fantasy world is the usual setting in most role playing games. The gamers build their own character (avatar) and take control of the avatar’s skill and abilities. They can customize their avatars to match their personality. Every game in the online RPGs comprises of different characters with different trait and responsibilities. They can be categorized into melee, ranged, and magic users.

What Makes MMORPGs Different

Massively multiplayer online role playing games can be recognized from the usual computer role playing games by the number of players and the virtual world where the game is situated. Computer role playing games can only cater to single player modes whilst massively multiplayer online role-playing games can cater to thousands of gamers at one time.

The world that the game is themed from is another factor that differentiates the two genres. A repetitive and constant setting is found on computer role playing games. Because of the way it is programmed, each time the gamers in computer RPGs plays a game, the same episodes are repeated.

On the contrary, MMORPGs’ provide an environment that lives on its own. That means that even if the player is away or online, the game continues to evolve and "live".

Increasing Revenues

Because of the popularity MMORPG has gained, it is not surprising to know that revenues rose dramatically over the years just so it could keep up with the world wide demand of online gamers.

In 2005 alone, about half a billion US dollars have been given to MMORPGs. Western revenues have been allotted with about one million dollars.

Economics

Most online role-playing games feature living economies. Virtual items and currency have to be gained while playing the game and have definite value for the players. Such a virtual economy can be analyzed and has value in economic research and can even have a dramatic impact on the economies of the real world.

One of the early researchers of MMORPGs, particularly Edward Castronova, stated that the supply-and-demand market for virtual items is existing. It even crossed over the real world as much as the virtual one. Crossover requirements are some of the following :
The player’s ability to sell in-game items for virtual currency, trading of items which have the similar value, the purchase of game items with real money, and the exchange of real money with in-game money.

The idea of exchanging real currency virtual currency or in-game items has had a significant effect on both the players and game industries. People who make a living out of the virtual economies are termed as "gold farmers" and can be employed through the game shops or private forums.

Real currencies in exchange for virtual money and in-game items are usually prohibited by game publishers. However, because of necessity this exchange cannot be avoided. An example of this is "Entropia Universe", an online game that allows real money in exchange for game money and vice versa.

Video Poker: How to Play the Game

If you are looking for a fun and challenging alternative to playing slot machines, video poker is the game for you. Instead of simply pulling the machine handle and hoping that you will be lucky enough to meet a row of identical icons, in video poker your moves would rule whether you win or lose. Moreover, the house edge in video poker is much lower than at slots.

Playing video poker is similar to playing draw poker on a slot machine. It enables you to enjoy the action of poker without having to face other players who may be more experienced and skilled than you are. In addition, in video poker, there are no dealers, no rakes, no bluffing, no cheating; it is all about you and your poker skills.

How to Play Video Poker:

There are several variations to video poker. Some of the video poker variations are played with standard 52 card decks while others are played with additional wild cards. All the variations are based on the traditional card game of poker. Therefore, a basic knowledge of poker hand ranking is necessary.

You start by choosing the coin value you wish to play and then pick the number of coins that you want to bet. Afterwards, you click on deal and five cards will appear on your screen. You can discard some or all of the cards and replace them with new ones. After pressing hold on the cards you wish to keep, you push the deal button and the machine replaces your discarded cards with new ones.

The outcome of the second draw determines whether you win or lose. Each video poker machine displays its payout table, which details the number of coins the machine pays for each five card poker hand. The payout table differs from one video poker variation to the other and so is the minimum hand that qualifies for a payout.

Video poker odds are the same as in regular card poker. A 52 card deck produces more than 2.5 million hand combination. Each video poker machine is set by a random number generator, which simulates the probabilities of drawing any of the poker hand combinations. While in regular card poker, the casino ensure its profits by collecting a rake, in video poker the casino ensure its profits by setting each machine pay table differently.

Video Poker Tips:
1) Learn the basics of draw poker before you start playing video poker at online casinos or at a casino nearby.
2) Know the machine payout of the table you have decided to play at by selecting the machine that offers the highest return.
3) Adjust your strategy to the specific video poker variation you intend to play.
4) Use a mathematical strategy to play the game correctly.
5) Do not keep cards that cannot be used to form a winning hand.
6) Hold on to any pair instead of keeping a high card.
7) Keep any pair rather than draw into a straight or a flush.
8) Practice playing online video poker in a play money mode.

Video Game Rentals Online

When it comes to video game rentals today, the procedure couldn’t be any easier. A number of online rental clubs have established their dominance within the video game rental realm. Lets take a look at a few and what they have to offer:

GameFly and Gottaplay are among the elite rental companies known in the market today. These two dominant rental services have more than four thousand games each within their collection to distribute at anytime. Both are equally matched in the marketplace and both offer well optimized websites to handle the renting aspect of the field and also contain previews, trailers, and codes which many game fans will enjoy as an added bonus.

Gamers will be eager to choose from titles both new and old and also from consoles such as XBOX, PS2, and PSP. Not only are the major game consoles included within these plans, but older systems as well including Nintendo, Sega, and Gameboy Advanced These rental plans generally range from $12.95 to $24.95 a month depending on how many games you would like to rent at a time.

When it comes close to renting video games, online rental companies are the only option for most. All titles from the two groups mentioned above are shipped within 1-2 business days and have many distribution points located anywhere in the U.S. Once you’re done with your game, you can return it in the self addressed envelope it came with and receive your next title immediately, with no late fees, and especially no gimmicks. Each game can be purchased at anytime if you decide you would like to keep the title. These prices are a lot lower than you can find most used games at your local used video game store.

Once you have established your video game rental account, you may want to check and see how long the game takes to reach your doorstep. Gottaplay and Gamefly have many distribution centers across the US, so you should not expect to wait anymore than 4 business days from the day they send out your shipment.

For experienced gamers, I would substantially suggest into checking out the superiority and selection of the leading online rental facilities mentioned above or on our review page below. You will not be disappointed, as most rental plans have offered a free 14 day free trial.

Video Poker: Why Do People Like It

Yesterday, I was having coffee at my local cafe with a few friends when I noticed a small guy in a sitting to the far-right corner of the cafe and away from all of us, this short man was crouched over a glowing video poker screen. Huh?

It was just a few months back that casinos all over the world and especially in Las Vegas were removing poker, baccarat and blackjack tables and adding more and more slot machines instead. But then something peculiar took place. Casino owners and employees noticed that one corner of the machines was more crowded than the rest. A short examination revealed that the games allocated to the slot section was none other than video poker. So why are so many interested players preferring video poker?

Here, I will try and answer some of the more practical reasons why this has happened and will happen even more and more:

1) The Odds: While slot machines offer odds that are pretty difficult to win on (and by that I mean the real big bucks), video poker machines are much easier when it comes to accumulating a large sum because it is somewhat based (even though loosely) on poker. This makes each player think that it is based on his skill more than just on luck.

2) More Choice: By this I am not referring to the pick of different slot machines, but rather to the fact that you have the choice of selecting the row to play with it whereas in slots, you have no real control after you press the button or pull the lever. It is not a secret that the principle of both these two games is to try and hit the money jackpot whether it is by getting the appropriate numbers or symbols aligned or whether it is by getting a royal poker flush. To do this in video poker, you have to pick from a number of five-hand cards.

3) Sitting Out: When playing at a slot machine, you have to play each and every time. If you want to stop, you have to clear the machine so that someone else can get a try. But this is not the case when playing video poker. This game allows you to simply sit out a round or two and then continue whenever you feel like.

4) Higher Money Ratio: Because of the chance that you can sit out any round where your cards are not any good. You have a bigger chance making an overall profit out of the time you spent playing at the casino whether it is an online casino or a land one or even whether it is just a small machine in the local diner or bar or regional gas station.

5) It is also said in many video poker circles and plenty of other articles around the web that the statistics of hitting higher paying options while playing video poker are higher in comparison to playing video slot machines.

Conclusion:
Not withstanding all of the above reasons, the fact that poker is very popular and slot machines too only leads me to assume that a game combining the two will be greatly appreciated by any player of either of the two games but more so by those who enjoy the drone of the machine.

Video Games - Tune In To What's In!

The eternal quest for entertainment leads us to the virtual world of video games, and mind you it's a huge world out there. With companies coming out with newer, revolutionary games, that are even more challenging, have enhanced graphics, integrated realism, and other awesome effects in their games practically every fortnight, it's difficult to see which ones made the cut.

There's a huge gaming community out there and it’s fair to say that what’s popular with them is probably worthy of a mention. However, scrubbing through the popular games to determine which one ranks top most is no easy feat.

While the top positions are constantly shifting around, some of the games that have made it to the top this year are:

Halo 3

This game is simply brilliant; it incorporates all that worked well in the previous "Halo" games and has mush more to offer. One of the key points that makes this game refreshing is the fact that the enemies in the game are perhaps as smart as the player itself so its all the more challenging and fun. The makers have also suped-up the multiplayer options and the feature of "Saved film" incorporates a PC idea with console like accessibility.

Super Mario Galaxy

An all time favourite and a legend in its self the Mario games have yet again made it to the top with Super Mario returning and a space adventure riddled with action that has enhanced gameplays and moves away from the dull and common routines making way for some really interesting variety. Packed with surprises the game feel fresh and new despite the fact that it probably a rehash of its predecessors. The graphics are great and sparkle, while the controls prove nicely tight. Is it any surprise then that Super Mario has made it to the top again?

Rock Band

It looks like the purchase of Harmonix by MTV is finally paying off. This game is lets four players, a guitarist, bass guitarist, Drummer and Vocalist have a blast on or offline through the revolutionary rock band rhythms game. It features loads of tunes licensed from several big record labels. Although it’s not completely perfect in the sense that it really lacks the “world tour” bit to give it that touch of making it big, Yet it give people a chance to explore a perhaps unfulfilled ambition as a musician in a rock band and it works out great as a substitute for those who just won’t be able to ever play onstage with real music instruments.

BioShock

Designed for play on the Xbox and PC its setting is based in an alternative reality that’s an underwater battleground. There’s a lot of strategy and thinking involved in this first person shooter game. Attacks from mutants and mechanical drones that roam across this underwater world make for a very interesting game. An intriguing game it captivates the players right from the beginning where the primary player “Jack” ends up on the scene thanks to a plane crash over the Atlantic Ocean. From then on Jack makes his way through the game advised by different charters, he learns his of his origins and the purpose he is there. It’s a real thrilling game and definitely worth trying out.

Portal

Part of the 5 games constituting 'The Orange Box', 'Portal' turns out to be a pleasant surprise this year. This unique and innovative game is a puzzle of sorts with an excellent story line. The puzzle game is based on the concept of a special gum which is used to shoot portals and create worm holes to enter and exit them from time to time as well as to zap objects. The gun can be operated on almost all of the flat surfaces in the puzzle. What makes this game special are the excellent number of loops, comic narratives and excellent graphics and audio. The theme song of this game which you can hear towards the end is a work of genius.

Call of Duty - 4

Fourth release in the series of the same name, Call of Duty - 4 is a master piece from X-Box. This latest entry gives a powerful and dramatic sense of realism and a sense of immediacy to the player. The game offers you a choice of playing a US Marine as well as a British S.A.S. This gives the game a unique global appeal as players are drawn to it with a sense of loyalty and patriotism. Drawn from the latest experiences of war, this game will take the player across the globe, from one extreme battleground to another, be it the Middle East or Russia. Rendering images from the worst offerings of modern warfare, you will be enthralled by the reality of war and its effects in the real world. All said and done, this game will surely keep you on your toes.

Sony Playstation Portable Versus Nintendo DS

Both the PSP and DS have been vying for the top spot in the handheld console genre ever since, with recent releases of slim and lite models for each brand.

The PSP is a sensational handheld gaming console owing to its wide screen and graphics engine. The graphics on its gorgeous 4.3 inch LCD screen displays about 16.77 million colors with a screen resolution of 480 by 272 pixels. The graphical clarity of its games comes close to the Playstation 2 caliber. The PSP is capable of displaying stunning graphics and animations as well as DVD quality movies. No handheld gaming console ever comes close to the visual quality of the PSP.

The DS is by all means unique in terms of its graphical interface and gaming style. Amusingly, the DS has two 3 inch LCD screens capable of displaying 260,000 colors with a resolution of 256 by 192 pixels. The DS is inferior in terms of graphical quality, so you might say. But get this, with dual screens and with the touch-sensitive bottom screen, the DS revolutionized the world of gaming as we know it.

If you have previously tried Sony gaming consoles, you will be very familiar with the control scheme of the PSP. The PSP lives up to the Playstation name by inheriting its renowned button layout. Much like the original Playstation and Playstation 2 controller, the PSP offers comfortable and effective gaming controls as the company was known for. Probably a major setback was the exclusion of the two shoulder buttons and the right analog stick, which played a vital role in many games especially in First-Person Shooters. But hey, it’s a portable console and it’s supposed to be handy and not bulky. So it is acceptable for the PSP to have some limitations in controls compared to the much flexible Playstation controller. Nonetheless, the PSP’s control scheme brings the gaming feel to whoever wants to have some hardcore gaming fun.

The touch screen feature is arguably the most amazing feature of the DS. In terms of control flexibility and style, the DS can’t be beat. With the included stylus, you can play a number of games by touching the bottom screen. What’s even more impressive is the handwriting recognition of some DS games. There are puzzle and math games which require you to write onto the screen the correct answers to win. Many other platform and interactive games require you to perform certain strokes using the stylus to perform feats such as jumping, swinging the sword, and others. Another surprising feature of the DS is voice command using the unit’s integrated microphone. Some DS games require you to speak words or phrases. With its uniqueness, the DS brings fun in gaming in the quirkiest and most amusing way.
With regards to the game library, the PSP is flooded with games compared to the DS. This is because the PSP is capable of receiving ports or mellowed down versions of games from the major consoles due to its powerful graphics engine. With this, one might notice that most of the PSP’s games are portable versions of console games. The DS on the other hand, has its own unique and exclusive game library composing of famous Nintendo franchise games and the like. Although lacking in epic games such as those in the PSP, the DS makes up by having its own share of short but fun games. Therefore, the common connotation for many is that the PSP is for hardcore gamers while the DS entertains both casual gamers and fans of the Nintendo franchises.

Handheld gaming consoles are meant to give the fun gaming experience expected of these devices. However, since the development of special firmware for the PSP, the ability to play games is just one of its many functions. The PSP is capable of viewing pictures and playing music and video files. The PSP also has an internet browser for surfing the net using wireless LAN. There are even custom firmware or homebrew applications to enable the PSP to play games from previous generations of consoles. Having special firmware is the huge advantage of the PSP over the DS. The DS is sadly not capable of any of these, except being able to play Game Boy Advance games and running Pictochat, an embedded messaging application that wirelessly connects all DS units within range.

Both the PSP and DS can play multiplayer games through their wireless connection capabilities. PSPs can connect with other PSPs via Ad Hoc, which is a small range wireless frequency for exclusive PSP use. The DS can also do the same, having its own exclusive frequency only detected by DS units.

Being portable gaming consoles, the battery life is one of the user’s major concerns. With a CPU clock running at a tremendous 333 MHz equaling a Pentium III’s power, the PSP can only last up to 4 to 6 hours when in use. The DS takes one big leap as it can surprisingly last for up to 10 hours even while supporting its brightly lighted dual screens.

In the end, it is really up to you to determine which portable gaming console suits your preferences. The visual prowess, multimedia perks, and wide array of games may draw you to the PSP, but you have to consider the unique gaming style and exclusive games of the DS. The PSP is sold generally at a higher price, which makes the DS more affordable among the two. Whatever your choice, you are certain to experience the gaming pleasure anytime and anywhere with the Sony PSP and the Nintendo DS.

Playstation 3 Review

It’s black, it’s shiny, it’s a dust magnet and it is a console gaming system that offers so much more than merely the ability to play the state-of-the-art games.

Sony’s catchphrase for the PlayStation 3 is PLAY B3YOND (aka Beyond) – and what the PS3 offers is a device that is capable of playing the latest PS 1080p games, surfing the Web, play blu-ray videos and so much more.

PlayStation 3 80GB

But first things first …

The local phone company tech showed up at the door to install DSL. Cool. Problem was the wireless modem was connected to the wall outlet upstairs and the PS3 was in the master bedroom (hooked up to the HDTV) downstairs. Look in the manual … Select Network Settings … Select Internet Connection Settings … Select “Wireless” and then press the X button. A firmware download later, the machine was surfing the Web, using a Logitech USB keyboard.

There were a couple of retail games included in the box – Genji: Days of the Blade and Resistance: Fall of Man. Genji was tried – nope, need to upgrade the firmware to the next iteration (from 1.00 to 1.02). Again, not a problem. Resistance comes packaged with the firmware upgrade and other games down the line will do the same thing (think PC and getting the latest iteration of DirectX with the game).

Sony ushers in its version of the next-gen console system with the launch of the PS3 on November 17. Pre-sales indicate the machine will sell out. The first 500,000 units shipped carried the blu-ray release of Talladega Nights: The Legend of Ricky Bobby. Sony wants those who buy the console to see what blu-ray can do. Words don’t do a blu-ray justice. It could be mentioned that blu-ray disks hold much more information than DVDs (DVDs can hold nine gigs of information while blu-ray disks can hold 50 gigs), and in the case of movies come the closest yet to a visual experience that is amazing. Imagine all that on a disk.

PlayStation 3 80GB

What’s in the box …

The PS3 comes in two models, the lower-priced ($499) 20-gigabyte playstation 3 hard drive and the ($599) 60-gig playstation 3 hard drive. There are differences, aside from the hard-drive size between the two.

The 60-gig machine uses a Cell Broadband Engine and the main memory is 256-meg XDR RAM with 256-megs of GDDR3 VRAM. The hard drive is a 2.5” Serial ATA and the main input/output devices include a memory stick, SD and CompactFlash disks as well as four USB 2.0 ports. The 20-gig machine only has the USB ports, not the other input/output device ports. The hard drive size and the input/output configurations are the differences between the two machines.

The machine will support screen sizes of 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p with the ability to connect either through HDMI cables (not included) or the composite analog cables (5 connections – three for video and two audio channels). Both machines have the digital audio capabilities and the Blu-ray/DVD/CD (read-only) disc drives.

Blu-ray and Cell Broadband Engine …

The Cell Broadband Engine was developed by IBM, Sony and Toshiba and is purported to deliver up to 10 times the processing speed of a typical home computer. The hype on the engine states that developers should be able to start approximating actual intelligence in games, rather than artificial intelligence, meaning the enemies should get a lot smarter. The engine is capable of performing 200 billion calculations per second and has a clock speed of 3.2 GHz.

The blu-ray disc offers next-gen media capabilities that can render high-definition graphical power to a receiver that is also HD. It can support 1080p, which is 1,080 lines of progressive scan – the highest resolution available. Blu-ray discs can carry more than five times the amount of data of a DVD. DVDs can hold up to 9 gigs of information but the blu-ray disc can hold 50 gigs – which translates, in gaming terms, into titles that will be much bigger in terms of detail or game scope. Blu-ray also supports 7.1 surround sound.

Sixaxis controller …

No more forced feedback from the controller – that has been replaced by gyroscopes in the peripheral that will enable players (if supported by the game) to use controller movement to affect the game. Let’s face it – we have all tried to take corners in a racing game by tilting the controller in the direction we wanted to turn. With the sixaxis controller, that will be possible. Menus will be able to be accessed by tilting the controller, or flight controls will rely on the angle that the controller is at. In every other way, this is the PS control device. However, only one sixaxis controller comes in the box.

PlayStation Network …

Signing up is fast and free. You can connect to the Internet via the CAT5 port or the wireless network card. Each account is broken into two parts – the Master account and the secondary account. On the network you can download demos, keep track of a friends, send messages, and chart game progress. There is an option to input billing information (credit card) so that you can buy games and such through the network and load them onto the hard drive of the machine.

Using the machine …

The PS3 has a crossbar menu on the boot screen. This is exactly the same as the PSP. You can store video, audio, downloads, browse the Internet, message friends, access the PlayStation store (where there are free downloads and downloads you would pay for as well), or launch a movie or game.

The disc simply slides into the front of the machine, a la a CD player in your car, and the buttons to eject it, or turn off the machine take only a whisper of a touch. Using the controller, which has a lithium battery in it and once charged can go wireless, the PS3 owner can quit the game by pressing the PS logo, holding it down and waiting for the prompts. The power supply is built into the casing, and while I puts out some heat, it does not feel as hot as the 360 external power supply.

Navigating the crossbar menus is a breeze and hooking up the PlayStation Network is also easy.

Anticipations and expectations ran high for the next-generation console systems and Sony has delivered. This machine is amazing.

Pros:
Blu-ray, Cell Broadband, storage, Web access, sixaxis controller and high-def graphical output all add up to a machine that is delicious to look at and delightful to play on, or just to watch movies on. The machine is easy to use, but the cover is a dust magnet and will need to be tended to (wait, isn’t that a ‘con?’ Nope, the sleek machine design is a definite ‘pro.’)

Cons:
There is a marked difference in storage and input/output between the 20-gig and 60-gig machine. Everything else is the same, but with only a price point difference of $100, it seems silly to not buy the bigger machine. Clever marketing is not entirely too friendly in asking consumers to cough up that extra $100 for more machine. Sony did tout this as backward compatible with all PSOne and PS2 titles, but – while not confirmed – there does seem to be some titles that will not run on the machine.

Verdict: 9.7
The games, both as launch titles and those coming in the next few months, will be amazing and will take console gaming into the next generation. The controls are easily accessed and used – both on the PS sixaxis controller and the crossbar navigational system. This machine has so much that using it merely as a gaming device seems rather silly. No, it won’t be a primary Web surfing tool (and it is recommended you get a USB keyboard for that anyway) but the PlayStation Network is a definite bonus. Blu-ray provides wondrous graphical output and the machine does play CDs as well as old PS titles (maybe not all, but still the majority). With online downloads, or games with the latest firmware support, this is a machine built to play, to use with entertainment media and to go online with.

Go ahead, spend the extra $100 for the bigger machine, you may be glad you did so – especially if you plan to store photos and such on the machine. About the only thing that would have made this better would be a R/W disc.

Sony has said that this is the foundation for the next 10 years. Maybe it is, maybe technology will outgrow it sooner, but one thing is certain – this machine fits today’s entertainment needs wonderfully.

Why Online Role Playing Games Are In Demand

Online role playing games can trace its history back to the 1970s, where the earliest multi user games started to appear. Rogue, a very famous dungeon crawler, was released in1980. Monsters, items, and setting were represented by letters. This in turn, inspired a whole genre of similar clones.

The Gamer's DelightImage by One lucky guy via Flickr

Dungeons and Dragons have long influenced the development of role playing games. Console playing games’, such as Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, success divided the genre into two: the console role playing games and the computer role playing games. This is because of the cultural differences where game consoles are produced primarily for personal computers in Japan and role playing games in the Western World.

Online Role Playing Games started as single player games when it was first introduced. However, with the advent of the internet, more and more improvements were made on role playing games. What started as a game for one now has all people coming from different countries playing together in one game. Multiplayer options have grown remarkably big that game companies find ways to improve it over and over again. With these improvements came massively multiplayer online role playing games (MMORPGs) that continued to make online gaming more popular each year.

Role playing games are games where the participants or players assume roles of certain fictional characters and follow stories as the game process continues.

These characters are usually called avatars and can be customized according to the player’s preferences. Participants determine their character’s actions whether it succeed or it fails. Like any other game, online role playing games also have guidelines and formal system of rules and mechanics that has to be met. Within this rules, the participant can improvise and shape the outcome and direction of the games.

Stories

The games are based around stories which are mostly adventure and fictional in type. Online role playing games centers around fantasy and mythological genre were the participant has to achieve a certain goal to advance further into the game. These goals are sometimes called "quests" or mission. They involve chasing of dragons from the city, saving a damsel in distress, or fighting evil masters and wizards. How one wins these fights depends on their character’s strength, characteristics, and skill.

More About the Characters

Players are given options on how they want to improve their character’s performance. They can modify this through enhancing their character’s skills, attributes, equipment, and special abilities. In most RPGs, these improvements are offered as rewards for accomplishing missions and overcoming certain challenges. These rewards have to be earned.

Status Bars

Unlike traditional video games where health or a character’s attributes are displayed on colored status bars and meters, online role playing games have a more complicated way in displaying status levels. Instead of the simpler abstract graphical representation, they make use of numeric values which are constantly updated each time the character scores or takes a hit. These numerical values are displayed on the status screen of each player.

Multiplayer Options

Originally, role playing games were offered only a single player experience. However, with the advent of the internet, multiplayer modes gained popularity and rose sharply during the middle of the 1990s. Diablo was among the first to come up with multiplayer games. And with that, these multiplayer games became into massively multiplayer online role playing games (MMORPGs). Everquest is an example of these.

Role Playing Games - And The Fan Base Grows

Players or participants of Role Laying Games assume the role of different fictional characters, more popularly known as avatars, and try to make these characters victorious with each challenge it faces.

These avatars can be customized and built according to the preferences of the player. They may determine where their character may excel. However, as the game progresses, the character may built up more strength and powers or otherwise.

Online role playing games also have guidelines and a formal system of rules and mechanics that needs to be met. Working around these rules, participants can shape the outcome and direction of their games.

Background

It was in the mid 1970s when it all started. Online role playing games was developed from its traditional counterparts (computer role playing games and video games). In this year, the earliest multi user games started to appear. In 1980, Rogue, a very famous dungeon crawler was released. It was quite different back then because monsters, items, and settings were represented by letters. Form then, development of a new genre of similar clones.

One of the most influential games among all online role playing games is Dungeons and Dragons. It has a big effect in the development of online RPGs. The success of Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest console games divided the genre of role playing games into two : the console role playing games and the computer role playing games. Cultural differences are the reason behind this classification. Game consoles are produced primarily for personal computers in Japan and role playing games in the Western World.

When it was introduced, Online Role Playing Games began as single player games. However the arrival of the internet and the virtual world made developments in online role playing games. After that, players from all over the world began to enjoy the games in this genre. They were able to participate in multiplayer games with players from all parts of the globe.

These games have grown to be an online gamer sensation that RPG companies discover ways to make it better. These improvements led multiplayer gaming into massively multiplayer online role playing games (MMORPGs) that continued to make online gaming more popular each year.

Challenges

These games are centered on stories which are more often than not, adventure and fictional in type. There are also centered on fantasy and mythological genres. Players have to reach a certain goal or complete a mission in order to advance further into the game. These missions and challenges are often called "quests".

Some of these involve chasing off dragons, fighting evil wizards and masters, and saving damsels in distress. The outcomes of these games are dependent on the characters strengths, characteristic, and skills.

Little More About the Avatars

As stated, players have the power to customize their characters according to their preferences. However, the improvement of there characters are highly dependent on the course of the game. Enhancing their character’s skills, attributes, equipment, and special abilities are important so as to achieve the goal of the game.

Improvements and achievements are often given as rewards for accomplishing their quests and overcoming obstacles. In short, these rewards have to be earned.

Multiplayer Modes

Among the online role playing games, Diablo was the first to come up with multiplayer options. Multiplayer modes became popularity during the mid1990s. Then after, they became massively multiplayer online role playing games (MMORPGs) because of its popularity.

With the advent of the Internet, online games have been played over computer networks. Over the year, the online gaming has expanded and provided a large influence to the overall expansion computer networks from the popular growth of Internet access itself and the local networks to the Internet.

These online games can vary from games that are text based to complex graphical and virtual games which are simultaneously populated by many players all over the world. Nowadays online gaming has become a social activity because of the online communities incorporated into the recent online games.

The rising popularity of flash and java and internet revolution made video streaming, audio streaming, and a whole new set of user interactivity possible. When Microsoft began including flash players as a pre-installed component of "internet explorer", the Internet shift from a data/information source to also offer on-demand entertainment.

Flash Players

When flash players were included into the internet explorers, it gave way for web sites to offer games to the web surfers. World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy XI and Lineage II are among the most popular online games to date.

These games charge monthly fees to their subscribers so that they may be able to access the services and avail the services they need. However, games such as Guild Wars, do not charge monthly fees to their subscribers.

Massive Multiplayer Online Games (MMOG’s)

With the advent of broadband internet access, massive multiplayer online games were made possible especially in developing countries. Using the internet, MMOGs became very popular to children, teens, and young adults because the internet allows thousands of players to play and participate in the same game at the same time.

Massive multiplayer online role-playing game (World of Warcraft), Massive multiplayer online real-time strategy (Mankind), and Massive multiplayer online first-person shooter (Dark Fall) are one of the most popular styles of MMOG’s.

Pros and Cons of Online Games

Because of the growing access to broadband internet, gamers can play there favorite online role playing games from the comfort of their own home while interacting with the other gamers even without meeting them yet.

Here are some advantages and disadvantages of playing online games at home :

Pros

Online games provide privacy. Online gaming can be played at home rather than go to internet cafés with other people lining up just to play the same game.

Online games are cheaper. Because you can play from the comfort of your own home, you can play for as long as you can without paying for large amounts in the internet cafés.

Online games are safe. Online gamers need not to go out of their homes so as to guarantee safety. You also need not to reveal your true identity to other players while maintaining interaction with them.

Cons

Online games are time consuming. These games are quite competitive and one needs time to think of strategies and accomplishing their goals. They also need to spend large amounts of time to keep up with other players.

Online games lessen social interaction. Because of the large amount of time players spend in front of the computer and interacting with other gamers mostly through chat, they become impersonal in dealing with people. They would rather spend the entire day interacting through chat than actually meeting and talking to individuals in person.

Online games can cause eye strain and head ache. While most online games are fun to play with, they can become very addictive to the majority of players. Spending large amounts of time in front of the monitor not only prove to be eye straining but can cause prolonged head ache even if they stop playing the game.

Computer Role Playing Games

Online Role Playing Games, or sometimes refereed to as Computer Role Playing Games, are a wide range of games that requires the player to build a hero or a character based on his preferences and fancy. These are types of games where one interacts with other players in the virtual world (usually in groups).

brothers playing video games together - _MG_9045Image by sean dreilinger via Flickr

As the game advances, the player’s character should be able to acquire experience as he or she will be needing this in order to succeed with other rounds or quests. The character must be able to become more powerful and should be able to obtain new and advanced abilities.

Electronic role playing games is a broad genre under the video games category. These were the early beginnings of inline role playing games. These games were originally from Dungeons and Dragons, a traditional role playing game which had been the basis for advance online role playing games nowadays. The game mechanics and the settings of the games were formatted from this game.

Interactions in online role playing games are done in the virtual world using the internet. These may be done individually (single player games) or with a group of friends or team mates (multiplayer games). Computer role playing games offer almost identical features with online role playing games.

Avatar

Online role playing games revolves on making or building your own character. These characters are also called avatars. More often, players find it fun and put effort in choosing their avatars. There are different abilities that your avatar can excel on. However, the abilities and powers of the characters depend on the progression of the game.

The characters represent the skills and abilities of the player himself. It shows how he or she decide or control the game outcomes. A status screen displays the attributes of the player and his character. It uses numerical values instead of meters, bars, and other simple abstract graphical representation that the usual video games utilize.

Fantasy Setting

A fictional and high fantasy setting is another feature of online role playing games (and other RPGs in general). These settings come from science fiction or space opera themes. However, some online RPGs also utilize historical settings and backgrounds.

Exceptions to these trends are online role playing games such as Bloodlines ("gothic punk), Arcanum (steam punk), Darklands (a combination of medieval German legend and history), Fallout (post-apocalyptic), and Mount and Blade (Medieval Europe with no magic or fantasy).

Quests

Team members or a group of characters (usually called a party) join forces to complete their missions (usually called "quest"). However, a single player may also do this by himself with the help of other players. These quests are usually fantasy fiction inspired. But classical mythology and science fictions are also used as basis for the missions.

These missions comprise different adventures along the way. Some challenges are defeating the evil boss, rescuing a princess, or clearing a dungeon of monsters. Some games require the character to talk to a Non Player Character (NPC) to know and receive his or her mission or quest.

Fetch quest, locational puzzles (such as opening locked doors by means of a hidden lever or a key), or engaging in dialogues are some of the requirements to proceed to the next level or challenge.

Majority of the online role playing games are played as a linear narrative. Meaning, one plays the game in a predetermined sequence. They just have to comply with the requirements for the next level to complete the entire mission.

A newcomer's guide ...

World of Warcraft is accessible and easy to understand

World of Warcraft has been massively successful and has exceeded the normal popularity of a role-playing title. The main reason for this is that it is very accessible and straightforward, and it is not difficult to play it. Even if you are completely new to gaming you shouldn’t have any problems getting started.

World of Warcraft is an easy game to set up. It comes on 4 discs that you install on your computer. You then have to create a game account. Your access to the game’s world involves paying a monthly subscription via credit card or an equivalent. The typical subscription rate is $19.95 per month. The first month is usually free as part of your purchase. The subscription can be paid every month, or every three months or six months if you prefer.

World of Warcraft operates through a series of servers that differ depending on where you are in the world. The servers are positioned globally and you simply connect to whichever one is local to you. The servers allow you to access the game. They are a reliable system and well maintained. There are different types of servers for each type of action that you play, whether it is role-playing or player versus player, for example. The servers are named as realms in order to increase the feel of the game.

World of Warcraft takes place in the world of Azeroth, a fictional land that has been the setting for all of the Warcraft games. This world has its own history and myths.
It was created by ancient gods, who gave rise to the earliest races on the planet. Azeroth resembles our own world and has recognisable landmarks like cities, forests, caverns, towers, dungeons and other structures. Azeroth has seen much trouble in its time, and its past has included great wars and conflict.

The universe in World of Warcraft is imaginative and is the home to many races.
The world of Azeroth is structured as three continents - the Eastern Kingdoms, Kalimdor, and Northrend. They all have their own inhabitants and climate. The Eastern Kingdoms are the home of humans, dwarves and gnomes, who are known collectively as The Alliance. Kalimdor is the home of tauren, orcs and trolls, who are known collectively as The Horde. Northrend is the home of the wicked Lich King.

Although World of Warcraft is rich and detailed, it is an easy game to understand.
All characters tend to belong to one of two groups, the Alliance and the Horde. The Alliance seems good in nature while the Horde is generally more evil. The Alliance characters are attractive to look at and are considered pretty, while the Horde characters are ugly and less appealing. You can play as characters from either group, and they each possess their own personalities and strengths.

World of Warcraft allows you to design your own character and customise them as you see fit. The character that you create can be one of nine possible classes. The classes include choices like druids, hunters, mages, rogues, shamans and warriors. Every class has its own skills and professions. You will use these talents to help you in the game. The process of creating a character is simple, and it allows you to express your own identity, as your character is a reflection of yourself.

The gameplay in World of Warcraft concentrates on exploration. The main game contains sixty levels, all of which feature much territory to explore. There are many items in the game that you can either take for yourself or trade. The main currency in Azeroth is gold, and you will need to collect a lot of it to buy armour and weapons and other useful goods. There is also a great deal of combat and you must defeat many monsters and creatures in order to progress.

World of Warcraft is designed beautifully, and you will find it a pleasure to learn how everything functions and works. The control system is sensible and makes good use of the keyboard and mouse. The game includes a camera that allows you to look around and have a full view of your environment. In general, it is a clear and comprehensible experience.

World of Warcraft is a very entertaining game and is easy to play. Its strength is that you don’t need to have detailed knowledge or experience of the role-playing genre to enjoy it. Even though the game contains a large and detailed world you will not have a problem understanding it. This is a perfect game for any kind of player.

How additive is World of Warcraft ?

A look at one of the most enthralling games ever made !

World of Warcraft has many strengths as a game, and one of its most famous qualities is how addictive it is. It is one of the most enthralling games around - there’s an element to it that just grips you and makes it difficult to stop playing. As a result, the game is a truly fascinating experience, and many people have become hooked on the fantasy world of Azeroth.

People tend to play World of Warcraft for long periods of time. The game has an internal clock and through that you can calculate how long you have been playing it for, in hours and days. A typical player of online games might spend around 24 hours per week online. World of Warcraft is so compelling that some people play 24 hours in one session. Players become so mesmerised with the game that they just keep going, and can spend an entire day inside its world.

World of Warcraft is an online multiplayer game, a genre that tends to be very addictive by nature. One of the reasons why this particular game is so addictive is because it’s popular. Sometimes multiplayer games peter out because not enough people are playing them, and they need many people in their world to be interesting.
World of Warcraft however has been continually popular since its launch. This has ensured that it is as busy as is needed and is full of opportunities for interaction.

World of Warcraft is essentially endless. Even though the game has a final level, the experience doesn’t end once you’ve reached it and completed it. There are other challenges to do. The game’s developers, Blizzard, are constantly updating the game and adding new material and content. This ensures that its world is forever changing and expanding. The constant stream of new players also keeps the game community varied, as there are always new characters to meet.

The key point about World of Warcraft is that it is not simply a game; it is an alternative world. It is a recreation of life, and it has built its reality in as much depth and detail as possible. World of Warcraft functions as an alternative to the real world and is one of the most involving games yet designed. Players use it to get away from reality and stress and to do something very different for a while. It is a hugely entertaining title of course, with much to offer to gamers.

The world of the game still exists and grows even when you are not playing it. One of the game’s features actively encourages players to take a break every now and again. World of Warcraft features an element called the rested state, a reward system for more casual players. When players have their characters stay in an inn or a city, in other words when they aren’t playing the game, they earn certain bonuses and advantages. This can help with their progress when they do return to it.

World of Warcraft also includes internal controls that can limit how long a person plays it. The game features special parental controls that allow adults to determine how much their children may use it. They can set up a play schedule and restrict their children’s access solely to evenings or the weekend. It is also possible to set it to force a player to take a break every hour or so. This ensures that people use the game sensibly and within reason.

The World of Warcraft Phenomenon

World of Warcraft has enjoyed a huge and unexpected popularity

World of Warcraft is an enormously popular game that has experienced success beyond what anyone might have expected. It has become a mainstream triumph and has widened the audience for its genre and for gaming in general. It has also had an effect on the game industry, and in many ways is a surprising and remarkable title.

What World of Warcraft has done is to make the multi-player game more popular. Before it arrived, the majority of people playing multi-player online games were usually teenage and twenty something males. World of Warcraft has broadened the gaming audience considerably. All sorts of age groups and individuals are now playing it. In particular, it has brought much younger gamers towards the genre.

World of Warcraft has appealed to people who aren’t normally into gaming. It is quite common for someone to try it because they have a roommate or a friend who has it, and then they themselves become hooked. An academic study, The Daedalus Project by Nick Yee, has examined people who play the multi-player genre. Almost 20% of people now playing these games have had little prior experience in video gaming. World of Warcraft’s role in attracting such people can not be underestimated.

World of Warcraft has appealed to women, who are not the typical audience for multi-player titles. Women either actively seek the game out, or try it because their boyfriend or husband is a fan. Around half of the women who play games like Warcraft are playing with their partner. In general, women now make up around a third of the overall number of people who play online multi-player games. World of Warcraft is often the key title in introducing them to the genre.

World of Warcraft has made gaming a social experience. People play the game together in groups. Couples play it together, and around 25% of people who play games like Warcraft are playing with their romantic partner. Families also play together, and it is common for people to experience it with a family member. Parents play World of Warcraft with their children, and brothers play alongside each other in the game. It has a clear, universal appeal that encourages such interaction.

One factor that has assisted the popularity of World of Warcraft is the availability of free trials for the game. While it was in development there were beta tests that introduced the game to players. Most significantly, though, the game’s developer Blizzard has held free trials for the game since its release. This has ensured that anyone can try it and play it. Most people who sample the game want to continue with it, and are likely to buy the game and sign up for the monthly subscription.

The vast audience for World of Warcraft has been of interest to the game industry. Before the game came along, game companies felt that the multi-player genre was full and that there was no more room for a new title. The game has proven otherwise and has shown that the market can actually expand and grow. Game companies have been impressed by its success, and are very interested in why it has taken off to the extent that it has. They had not realised the potential in the online role-playing genre.

World of Warcraft has shown that there are actually many possibilities for the genre. Game companies are now looking to make multi-player games that are more accessible and easier to play. They want to appeal to more casual players who may not have the time or inclination to spend all their time on a game. They are also examining how multi-player games are designed. They used to be serious and overly demanding titles. Warcraft has shown that they can be purely entertaining and fun.

World of Warcraft then is a title that has broken new ground and increased the market that multi-player games can have. It has been popular with different types of people and has made the game industry rethink their whole approach to the genre. It is a very accessible game and it has developed a broad, mainstream appeal as a result.

An impressive GAME !

A look at why this game is the most highly entertaining game on the planet right now

World of Warcraft has been an amazing success on every level. There is something about this particular game that has connected with people, more so than any other title. Its popularity just keeps growing and shows no sign of slowing down. The game has many strengths, all of which have contributed to its success.

World of Warcraft is well developed and well made. The game’s developer, Blizzard Entertainment, has tremendous quality control. They put a lot of pride and effort into their games, and this title was no exception. It spent five years in development, with a team of 65 people working on it. Blizzard held beta tests for the game to see how people responded to it, and they used these opinions to hone and perfect the game as much as possible. It was a very ambitious game, and it has really fulfilled its potential.

From the beginning, World of Warcraft was in a strong position, in that it already had a following before its release. There are many people who were fans of the previous Warcraft games and also of role-playing games in general, so there was a core audience who were predisposed to buy it and to like it. Crucially, it met the expectations that people had of it. It delivered on the anticipation and the hype that it saw in the run up to its launch.

World of Warcraft is a very impressive game. It is great fun to play, entertaining you and challenging you at the same time. It has strong characters and rich environments, with the game world of Azeroth existing as its own convincing, distinctive universe. It is visually appealing, with a charming, sublime look to it. There is a great deal to do and a lot of variety to the gameplay. It moves well and is always interesting.

People are attracted to World of Warcraft because it allows them to play an assortment of different characters. It features great range and choice. You can be any kind of character and any gender that you want to be. The ability to play as either Alliance or Horde gives players the best of both worlds - you can be either a hero or a monster. The freedom you have in customising your character is pleasing, and makes it a more original and unique experience.

World of Warcraft offers different types of gameplay. You can play the main part of the game, and go on a journey through Azeroth, completing quests and testing your skills in combat. Alternatively you can take part in the player versus player content. This has become an essential part of the game since it was introduced. Indeed for some players it is now the highlight of the whole title. The battlegrounds are exciting and unpredictable, and feature superb multi-player action.

World of Warcraft is great value and is a long-lasting title. It is ingenious and clever and a real challenge. The world of the game is enormous and will amuse you for a long time. The updates to the game enhance it further, and ensure that there are always new areas to explore and fresh sights to see. It is of such high quality that it may become the only game you play. It is so satisfying that people lose interest in other games and concentrate on this one title exclusively.

The brilliance of World of Warcraft is that it has built upon previous games of its type and improved them. It could be argued that it is the ultimate massively multi-player online role-playing game. It represents the perfection of the genre. It is not that it is hugely different to previous multi-player games, but rather that it has taken the genre and has made the best example of it to date. It is a masterpiece that has incorporated and refined all the elements of this kind of title.

World of Warcraft then is very inviting and is an excellent game. It appeals to people on many different levels, and this has helped it to reach a large audience. It is so well made and entertaining that its success seemed assured, and yet the scale of its success has been extraordinary. It now stands as an essential title.

Step by step levelling guide reveals...

Some people are natural born gamers... It's like their brain is hardwired and so finely tuned to playing games that no matter what game they pick, they are almost instantly pro.

I’ve got a friend who’s exactly like that...

He’s the freak that everyone calls for hacks because he’s naturally too good at COD4, he’s the guy you HATE in DOTA because he owns so hard, he is your gaming nightmare...

When he picks up a game he feels alive, it’s like he can feel the connections of logic before the event happens. He says it's difficult to explain unless you too can feel it but you know instantly when everything falls into place and there is nothing that can get in your way.

Some people also feel this when they momentarily "get in the zone"... Except he feels that every second he plays World Of Warcraft

This got him thinking.... And he confessed to me... “I can teach anyone to be a pro leveller in WoW”

Look, you can level to 70 in just 5 days with his help...

That's right he’s taken down the solo world record for power leveling and set a new standard that NO ONE has been able to reach.

The iPhone Helps Users Get the Message

It used to be that cell phones were used just for making calls, but that isn’t the case anymore. When people purchase a cell phone, they want to not only be able to talk on the phone to their friends, they also want to be able to talk to their friends with chat as well.

One of the biggest problems that people have when they are texting someone with a cell phone is that they find themselves making a lot of mistakes due to the keypads on their cell phones. But when you are texting with an Apple iPhone, you will find that your mistakes and typos seem to disappear like magic.

The reason for this is that the Apple iPhone is equipped with something called an SMS application, including a Qwerty soft keyboard that is highly intelligent.

What this does is that it seeks out the typos that you make when you are texting someone and fixes them for you. This saves you a lot of time, because you don’t
have to worry about going back and fixing them yourself.

Another feature that the iPhone has when it comes to messaging that teenagers will like is the ability to send out a text message to more than one person at once. This is really handy if you are planning a get together or an important meeting.

The Apple iPhone goes above and beyond what customers are looking for when it comes to texting capability, and helps them to do things quickly and efficiently.
